Discovered a love of being on stage in front of an

it as if it were yesterday.

my younger daughter, Stefany, insisted that I keep
the trophy!

dancing.

Very Personally Speaking…
This information has nothing to do with consulting,
speaking, or credentials and has everything to do with
getting to know more about Barbara the person. It is for
your eyes only or, as I like to say, between you and me.
I
entered the world as the only girl to Dean and Betty. My
brother, Lytle, was a year old and, over the next 6
years I would be blessed with three younger brothers. In
order of birth, Steve, David, and Rudy (shared middle
name of our grand dad; now prefers to be called by his
first name, Alan). My first cry was heard in a birthing
center in Socorro New Mexico.
When I
was about 2 my parents moved to the small town of
Florence AZ so my Mom could help nurse an Aunt back to
health following a terrible auto accident. My parents
still live in the same home that we moved into since
before I began first grade.
My first
entrepreneurial experience was making hand puppets and
selling them to family and friends. In addition to
recycling buttons and fabric scraps, I enjoyed pride in
my creations and found good use for the pocket change as
would any 6th grader.
Dinner
time was my favorite time growing up – we would all sit
at the table and engage in lively conversation about
what had happened that day in school, what projects we
all had going, who was doing what. The conversation pace
was fast and filled with laughter. The topic would
change on a dime and following it was challenging for
every one of the friends who joined us.
There
were many memorable vacations including rafting the
Colorado river for two weeks just following my high
school year. The power of the river is awesome! Having
won some races in competitive swimming with a powerful
backstroke, I am still amazed at nearly having drowned
while being tossed around in one of the rapids - while I
was on the boat! We did a great deal of camping growing
up, including a 6 week road trip to British Columbia,
hiking the Havasupai Canyon, and smaller excursions. My
love of the outdoors continues and I periodically hike
the Grand Canyon and spend time on Lake Powell in a
houseboat. The thrill of water skiing still calls.
My
education was intertwined with a few years of disco
dancing, being a stay-at-home Mom to two of the most
beautiful girls on this earth, dental assisting, and
teaching. My teaching career began when the director of
the program recruited me. She taught some of my dental
assisting courses and became my mentor and friend. I
continued to combine education with life as a single Mom
and a newlywed with a blended family and received my
M.Ed. from NAU with an appreciation for my supportive
family and for innovative delivery approaches to
education.
Some say
that opposites attract and form the best relationship.
In the case with Dane, my husband of 11 years, I have
grown to believe that the perfect compliment makes for
the best relationship. We are empty nesters and enjoy
supporting our children as they carve out their lives.
We are blessed to make our home in a community that
feels like the “country”. The animals in the
neighborhood run the gamut of the exotic to the
ordinary. There are peacocks who serenade with
jungle-like calls in the evening, goats, cows, chickens
(yes I enjoy hearing the roosters crow), horses, sheep,
geese, pigs, macaws, and every kind of dog imaginable.
We know and value our neighbors. We have strong ties
with our church community and value fellowship with the
active small group ministry. We are truly blessed with
friends and family and love. I feel blessed to be living
a dream with the man of my dreams.
Of
course I’ve left out the emotionally challenging parts
of my life. Although they were painful at the time they
were opportunities to become a better, stronger person.
Some might say I’ve mastered the art of making lemonade
out of lemons. With that I will conclude by sharing my
favorite recipe for lemonade:
